Round Town: St. Patrick's Day events

(WSLS 10) - Roanoke turns green this weekend for the Saint Patrick's Day Parade and Shamrock Festival. Bring the family to watch as a sea of green parades through downtown. The parade starts at 11 a.m. Then, stick around for the festival at Wells Fargo Plaza. Several bands will take to the stage with craft vendors surrounding the market building. There will be an expanded kids area in front of the Taubman Museum of Art from noon to 5 p.m.

Before the festivities you can take part in the Shamrock Hill Run. It features a one mile walk starting at 8:30 a.m. Then at 9:15 a.m. runners will take their marks for the 5K and 10K races. Registration is $35. Proceeds from the event go for tuition assistance at Roanoke Catholic.

Head to Highland County for the 57th annual Maple Festival. See how maple syrup is made from tree tapping to the finished product. The festival includes all you can eat buckwheat and pancake breakfasts and maple doughnuts as well as arts and crafts and live bluegrass bands. Events happening throughout the county on Saturday and Sunday.

Head to the Inn at Virginia Tech for the university's annual Civil War Weekend. Hear from speakers about Water and the Civil War, The education of President Grant and doctors' attitudes toward enemy wounded. Event runs Friday through Sunday. Registration is required.
