RADFORD, Va. (WSLS 10) - The Radford community will celebrate the start of construction on the new Radford Early Learning Center in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

The new center is being built to meet demand. A non-profit group called the Radford Child Development Inc. is heading up the project after it determined there was a great need for quality childcare.

Based on a survey of more than 1,300 people in the Radford community, the organization determined nine out of ten children under the age of five did not have easy access to quality childcare.

The new facility is expected to be complete by January of 2016. It's costing approximately $1 million to build.

Officials say the facility will offer an educational and nurturing environment for young kids. It will be able to accommodate more than 130 children.

The building will be located at 1511 Tyler Avenue in Radford. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the site at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
