Subway Commonwealth Games, Va. Wounded Warrior program present veteran competitions

SALEM (WSLS 10) - The 2015 Subway Commonwealth Games will feature events specifically for veterans, including disabled veterans, thanks to a partnership with Virginia Amateur Sports, the Virginia Wounded Warrior program and the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Virginia Amateur Sports said in a release the events were added to the Games to honor veterans' sacrifice and empower their strength to compete.

The six events for veterans, along with dates and locations, are:

  • Track & Field - 7/18-7/19 - William Fleming HS
  • Bowling - 7/31-8/2 - NRV Superbowl
  • Shooting - 7/18-7/19 - Roanoke Rifle & Revolver Club
  • 5k - 7/18 - Start: Wiley Dr Roanoke, VA
  • Racquetball - 7/17-7/19 - The Sports Racket Club
  • Archery - 7/17-7/19 - Green Hill Park

There will also be three divisions in which veterans may compete:

  • General – Veterans compete against all competitors, regardless of status
  • Veteran – Veterans compete against other veterans ONLY
  • Disabled Veteran – Veterans with a physical disability who would like to compete against other disabled veterans ONLY
  • 2015 marks the 26th Anniversary for the Subway Commonwealth Games and Virginia Amateur Sports.

    The Subway Games and VAS encourage and promote healthy lifestyles through competition for people of all ages.

    Most of the sporting events are located in the Roanoke Valley. However, some sports are located in the New River Valley, Lynchburg, Waynesboro, Richmond, and Virginia Beach. Participants from all over the state come and enjoy the spirit of competition.

    Main Games Weekend is July 17-19, which kicks off with the Athlete Tailgate Party and Opening Ceremonies on Friday July 19th starting at 4:00 at the Salem Red Sox Stadium. Participants can register online at www.CommonwealthGames.org.
