SALEM, Va. (WSLS 10) - The Salem School Division announced Wednesday it's already looking forward to the next school year thanks to a unique grant it has received from the State Department.

Andrew Lewis Middle School is one of just 20 schools in the nation to secure a grant that will allow the city's middle school to have a Chinese teacher on staff.

Officials say the grant, which is funded by the Teachers of Critical Language Program in conjunction with the American Councils for International Education and the State Department, will make it possible for the instructor to teach Chinese at all grade levels at Andrew Lewis for the full academic year.

They say the teacher will also be available for outreach programs for both elementary and high school students in Salem.

The Teachers of Critical Languages Program is designed to increase the study and acquisition of important world languages in U.S. schools, officials say.

Launched in 2006, officials say TCLP has provided fellowships to over 190 primary and secondary school teachers of English from Egypt and China to teach in K-12 schools throughout the United States.
