ROANOKE, Va. (WSLS 10) - The Roanoke Rescue Mission says they're seeing an increase in the number of children needing shelter this year.

From the beginning of the 2015 until the end of May, the Mission says they provided nearly 7,000 nights of shelter to kids. That number is up from close to 3,400 nights of shelter provided in the same period last year.

Each summer, the organization says they plan a special summer camp that allows homeless children to get outdoors and learn. With more kids in the shelter this year, that means more resources are needed.

The Mission says finding enough volunteers is a challenge because numbers drop during summer. With more than the usual amount needed this season, it's a concern for organizers.

Anyone who can volunteer is asked to please contact the Rescue Mission at 540-777-7651. The camp is expected to start next week and will run through July.
