BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) – After years of planning and saving, one Blacksburg fire station is ready to expand.

Station 3 will soon get a second floor that has five bunk rooms, kitchen space and a workout area.  This will allow volunteers to stay at the station all day and all night.

Firefighters say this living space could cut response times by about five minutes, and also help with recruitment.

The project will cost around $740,000. Construction is scheduled to finish sometime in the spring of next year.
