is a non-profit organization originally established in 1991 as The Roanoke Valley Therapeutic Riding Program. It holds a competition for a person with needs treatable with certain kinds of equine therapy to win a therapy horse.
Now the organization has entered a contest of another kind. A farm in Tennessee is giving away 10 gypsy horses to 10 non-profits and Healing Strides is in the running. Executive Director Carol Young said gypsy horses are great for the kinds of therapy her organization does.
"They tend to have - and are known for - their really quiet personalities and that's what we need here is a horse that gets people, is kind easy to manage and that's the reputation they have," Young explained.
