According to Sheriff Barry Letterman, on Thursday, April 30 the department began an investigation with school staff concerning possible threats made to students at the school.

During the day, and later Thursday afternoon, the Appomattox County 911 center received dozens of calls from concerned students and parents about threats to the school on Friday, May 1. Letterman says all of these calls of concern were followed up on by deputies.

During the course of the investigation at approximately 3 a.m. Friday, May 1, the Sheriff's Office says they began a subsequent investigation into the death of a 16-year-old Appomattox County High School student.
