SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE (WSLS 10) - The Red Cross will honor heroes at an award ceremony in March and the person being honored as a good Samaritan was just 14-years-old when he survived a deadly boating accident and helped rescue three others involved.

Shane Wolford's trip to Smith Mountain Lake last spring with his grandfather and his dad's best friend, Tim O'Quinn, turned tragic when another boat hit theirs.

After the accident happened Shane jumped into action and helped his grandfather and the two people who were in the boat that ran into them.

Shane called for Tim, but said he heard nothing. It was later determined that Tim died instantly in the crash.

Shane will accept the Red Cross Good Samaritan Hero Award with a heavy heart. He saved three people, but will never forget his dad's best friend who didn't make it home from a night on the water.
