The money given to Roanoke Fire-EMS was earmarked for the department's new "Awards and Recognition Program."

The internal recognition program has been in the works for a while, but is just getting off the ground. It's a way for members to honor one another for accomplishments including years of service, firefighter of the year, and EMS provider of the year.

"Firefighters come in, they do their job, they don't want to be recognized for it, but with your peers putting you for these awards it puts a different spin on it, it's a good way for us to look at each other and say good job, fantastic," said Captain Toby Bedwell, Roanoke Fire-EMS.

The Roanoke City Police Department plans to use its donation toward the nationally recognized "Growth through Opportunity Program" where the department gives young adults with special needs a work place opportunity.
