ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is several weeks away, but months of work go into making the 5K a reality, and one local breast cancer survivor went from walking the race to organizing it.
Tonia Hackett was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer at just 48-years-old. After her diagnosis, she signed up to walk in Susan G. Komen's Race for a Cure.

"I went there and saw all these people, and survivors have on pink t-shirts that sort of designates them and I thought, 'wow.' There was a sea of pink there, so I really wanted to make sure I was a part of that," Hackett remembered.
After the race ended, Tonia signed up to volunteer the next year. She's been helping organize the race ever since.
WSLS Anchors Lindsey Ward and Dawn Jefferies will be out at River's Edge in Roanoke, emceeing the race on April 25.
