BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Thousands are expected to participate in the Relay for Life at Virginia Tech on Friday.

Virginia Tech has held the largest collegiate relay in the world for the past six years.  The program has raised more than $4.5 million in the fight against cancer.

This year, Virginia Tech senior Emily McCloud is directing the event.  McCloud lost her father to cancer when she was just twelve years old. Since then, she has lost two other extended family members to this disease.

That is why McCloud is dedicating this year's relay event to her mother, Ruth, and other caregivers just like her.

This year's relay kicks off Friday at 5 PM on the Drillfield at Virginia Tech.
