ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A live disaster simulation was held Friday morning at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital to further test the ability of students to work across various disciplines.

Jefferson College of Health Sciences, VTC School of Medicine and Carilion Clinic gave students a taste of what it will be like when they graduate. The simulation began at 9 a.m. Friday at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Organizers say the exercise was engineered to test students from physician, nursing and rehabilitative disciplines to communicate and critically think together as a team.

During the simulation, students responded to an unknown event, triage victims, and sent mock patients to a simulation Emergency Room and even conducted surgeries and developed rehabilitation plans.

Hospital officials said this type of critical, hands-on education is known as "interprofessionalism" in the health care world.
