HAYSI (AP) - Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting of a man by a Dickenson County sheriff's deputy.

State police say the man suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment. No one else was injured.

The shooting occurred late Tuesday night in Haysi after a rescue squad responded to a 911 call.

State police said Wednesday that the man threatened the emergency responders with a gun. After police arrived, the man refused commands to drop the gun.

State police say in a news release that the deputy shot the man when he threatened the officers.

The man and the deputy haven't been identified.

The Dickenson County Sheriff's Office requested the investigation.
