ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – Mill Mountain Zoo announced Friday that the Zoo Board of Directors has not only met the challenge goal set by Zoo supporters Ed and Barbara Kitas, but have exceeded the challenge as well as completing it before the February 28, 2015 deadline.

Zoo officials say the original challenge to raise $100,000 between October 30, 2014 and February 28, 2015 was completed in early January 2015.

They say that success prompted the Kitas’ to issue a new challenge to the Board by donating an additional $40,000 to be matched. That challenge was met and exceeded by $1,000 also by the February 28 deadline.

Officials say the dollars raised, matched by Ed and Barbara Kitas in combination with the GE Foundation Matching Gifts Program, combine to a $280,000 gift to the Zoo.

The Zoo Board says they will continue working to “Renew the Zoo” with the staff and the community.
