SALEM (WSLS 10) - Virginia Department of Transportation equipment operators and contractors in western Virginia say they're actively engaged in plowing and treating roads.

A winter storm has covered roads with two to five inches of snow. Drivers are encouraged to consider delaying travel until later Thursday when conditions are expected to improve.

Currently, VDOT crews and contractors are plowing and treating the interstate and primary highways (those numbered 1-599), but snow continues to fall and cover these routes again.

Once the snow stops and the main roads are plowed and treated, VDOT officials say crews will move to the secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) and finally into neighborhoods and subdivision to plow.

VDOT equipment operators say they're working in 12-hour shifts around the clock to plow and treat roads.

Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions and traffic incidents on Virginia roads by using VDOT's 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website.

The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
