LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - Holy Cross Regional Catholic School student Claire Thornton was recognized in front of her fellow students Wednesday morning at a school assembly.
According to school officials, the fifth grader won both chapter and district essay awards through the Daughters of the American Revolution's essay competition.

They say Claire was competing against several other winners from local elementary schools.
"We would like to present Claire with her certificate, medal and a check for her excellent work," said Yolan Williams of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the DAR in a written statement, released on Wednesday.
