ROANOKE CO. (WSLS 10) – A Roanoke County fifth grader is named a grand prize winner in the Library of Congress summer essay contest.

Gavin Dent wrote about the book that shaped him.

He wrote an essay based on the book Omaha Beach and Beyond: The Long March of Sergeant Bob Slaughter.

The middle school student said the book made him appreciate the greatest generation.

He said he now stands a little taller when saying the Pledge of Allegiance and shakes the hands of veterans.
