SALEM (WSLS 10) - Due to anticipated weather issues this weekend school officials say the annual VHSL state wrestling tournament in Salem will move to a one day event, on Friday only.

Longtime tournament director Larry Hall says safety is the first priority. The tournament will become single elimination until the semifinals in all classes, with the only consolation round being for third and fourth place matches.

Hall says old time wrestlers will remember that's what the tournament looked like back in the 1960's.

Officials say a coaches meeting is scheduled for noon, with wrestling beginning at 3 p.m. The quarterfinal round should take the event until roughly 530 p.m. There will be no break. Semifinals will begin immediately and should be complete by 730 p.m.

The Finals and 3rd/4th place matches should wrap up by 10 or 10:30 p.m.

Hall explains that they will eliminate the formalities of the event as necessary to finish the tournament Friday. Tickets will be $10 for the 1-day event. Anyone holding a session pass can get a refund.
