ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – New Tuesday morning – Virginia Western Community College is adding a new program, “Medical Laboratory Technology.”
They work in hospitals, running tests on blood work and tissue samples, diagnosing diseases and monitoring drug treatments. The program head Jeffrey Gillette says about 80 percent of diagnoses are bases on decisions in the lab, but the field is a well kept secret because patients don’t interact with them.
“It’s a very important program. We really have a need for these people. It’s a countrywide need. It’s one of the growing fields in healthcare currently. It’s expected to have about a 20 percent growth within the next 10 to 15 years,” said Gillette.
The program starts in the fall but applications are being taken now. You can start in the medical field making about $40,000.
