BEDFORD (WSLS 10) – School officials are figuring out what to do with Body Camp and Thaxton Elementary Schools once they close at the end of the school year.
“Ideally some developer would come along and say there is a need for these I can find a use for them,” says Gary Hostutler, chairman of the school board.
Hostutler wants the buildings to be sold soon so they can avoid paying insurance and maintenance costs on the vacant building.
School officials say Thaxton and Body Camp Elementary Schools are valued at $6 million, but they’re not expecting a bid close to it because of their condition.
In the town of Bedford, officials are planning ahead for a similar move when Bedford Middle School closes by 2018. They formed a taskforce comprised of residents and business owners to brainstorm ideas on what to do with the building once a new school is built.
“I live close by and drive by four times a day, and I want to make sure that we explore all options,” says Courtney Holdren, a member of the taskforce.
Holdren is one of the members of the taskforce. He says the property is a focal point in town and residents have told him they want to see the school be turned into a higher education center or even apartments.
