American Red Cross celebrates National Blood Donor Month

Roanoke (WSLS) – The American Red Cross is celebrating National Blood Donor month.

The non-profit is hoping to raise awareness and get folks to attend drives during the month of January.

Organizers say if you give an hour you could save two or three lives.

Now is a particularly hard time for the Red Cross, because a lot donors are suffering from flu and cold.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get people’s attention right after the holidays, you know, you’re kind of dazed and also again weather plays a big impact, snow and ice events come up and that can deter donors for obvious reasons,” said Bill Johnson, American Red Cross.

Johnson says hopefully a new Red Cross app will get your attention and inspire folks to give blood.

You download it and you can track which hospital your donation goes to.
