MONTGOMERY COUNTY (WSLS 10) – A local fire department mourns the loss of one of their members to cancer.

This is a story we first brought to you back in July of 2014 when the Elliston Fire Department was not just serving the community, but also a colleague during his battle with small cell cancer.

Captain Billy Cook said Paul Herrell lost his battle with cancer Sunday night.

Over the summer the entire volunteer fire department and ladies auxiliary rallied behind Herrell, fundraising for his treatment and driving him to appointments.

Elliston Fire Chief Clyde Hodges says they wanted to help however they could, because when one member is hurting the entire department hurts.
