Common FAFSA mistakes that could prevent you from getting college money

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Paying for college can be a struggle. Now is the time to fill out the FAFSA.

The U.S. Department of Education says it takes most people 21 minutes to complete and could help you qualify for thousands of dollars.

They came out with the top seven mistakes most people make.

Some include: 

  • Not being prepared. Gather all the info you need to complete it before you start
  • Read carefully. They say too many students see delays in financial aid for simple mistakes that could be avoided like your income tax, it's not the same as your income
  • Entering the wrong name. Enter your legal name, not any nicknames
  • Use the IRS data retrieval tool. It launches February 1st and can help prevent errors
  • Sign the form. It may seem like common sense but make sure you sign the FAFSA. They see people complete the entire thing and not sign it, therefore it's not submitted

Virginia Western will be holding a free FAFSA workshop on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Computer labs in Webber Hall. It is open to the community for anyone looking for assistance completing the FAFSA.
