On Tuesday, Lynchburg city officials provided details about the gas levels found near the former Lynchburg landfill. According to the city manager, officials monitored the old site and found methane gas present 15-20 feet underground. However, city leaders said those gases are not coming to the surface.

"What we determined in that none of that is coming to the surface and affecting people" said Kimball Payne, Lynchburg city manager. Residents concerns are understandable but we do not believe there is a threat to them from methane gas in these landfills.

Payne said the city plans to conduct a neighborhood walk-through of the area in March. Moving forward, city leaders will determine a plan to fill the gullies.
