Students charged after incident with handgun at Dan River High School

DAN RIVER (WSLS 10) – Two students have been charged after one gave a gun to the other at Dan River High School.

According to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, a student was found to have brought a gun to school on Tuesday, but had transferred the .22 caliber handgun to another student. After getting the gun, the second student checked out of school and went home.

Deputies went to the second student’s home and recovered the gun without incident.

Juvenile petitions were obtained from the Pittsylvania County’s Juvenile and Domestic Court charging both juveniles with violating Virginia State Code §18.2-308.1: Possession of firearm, stun weapon, or other weapon on school property prohibited, a Class 6 felony.

Both juveniles are in custody at the W.W. Moore Detention facility, where deputies say they will be held awaiting their court dates.

In addition to the criminal charges, both are facing disciplinary action by the Pittsylvania County School Board.
