A woman called 911 stating her husband had been shot by another man. She told the Carroll County Sheriff's Office the man left the scene in a silver or white Ford pickup and was headed south toward North Carolina, and that he was armed with a rifle.

Upon arrival, deputies say the victim was identified as Marty Lee Hiatt. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen area. Deputies say Hiatt was able to talk enough to identify the shooter as Chris Duncan, 38. Hiatt;s wife and child were in the vehicle, but were not injured.

Deputies say evidence on the scene indicated Duncan fired at least seven shots at the vehicle.

The sheriff's office started canvassing the area, looking for a pickup truck matching the description and the suspect. Information was developed on several possible locations Duncan could be.

While deputies were heading to search a residence, Duncan's wife was located in the parking lot of Cana Exxon. While deputies were speaking with the wife, Chris Duncan called and spoke on the phone with deputies.

Duncan later came to the parking lot of the Cana Exxon and surrendered.

Duncan is charged with aggravated malicious wounding, malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Duncan was transported to the New River Valley Regional Jail. He's being held without bond.
