CONCORD (WSLS 10) - A local organization is breaking ground on a new volunteer center and majorly expanding it's volunteer workforce.

'Gleaning for the World' helps provide support in the U.S. bringing supplies to places hit by disasters like tornadoes or floods.

They also have missions around the world.

In 2014 the Concord based group had 1,800 volunteers.

The new volunteer center will enable them to double the volunteer base to have more than 3,000 volunteers from central Virginia.

"This is the first step in our capital campaign.  The next phase is the distribution center.  This will be the staging area where we can maneuver supplies to efficiently get supplies out quickly.  The final phase is West Storage Facilities, a 12,000 square foot expansion.  It will let us add additional storage space to hold more needed supplies. .  This will help us expand our outreach to reach 12 million people each year with critical life-saving supplies," said Andrew Young with Gleaning for the World.

The groundbreaking ceremony is Friday morning off Stage Coach Road in Concord.
