ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – November is Diabetes Awareness Month and the disease impacts more people in Virginia than some might realize. 

  • More than 10 percent of Virginians have Diabetes
  • That is more than 630,000 people in The Commonwealth
  • Diabetes increases the risk for heart disease by 2 to 4 times 
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure

Carilion Clinic Endocrinologist, Dr. Demetrios Herodotou says, “You have to make some lifestyle changes you have to change the way you eat and it is very important to begin exercising any little exercise can help but a regular exercise program goes a long way.”
