(WSLS 10) – Another Bedford County school will close its door at the end of this school year. On Thursday, the Bedford County School Board voted 4-3 to shut down Thaxton Elementary. The decision was a disappointment to many parents and teachers who hoped to sway the schools decision. Educators said closing the school was a tough decision that had to be made to help save money.
School leaders said they had to 46 positions last year and close to 200 positions over the past five years. Officials said closing Thaxton could save the district $800,000 per year and could help prevent future cuts. But closing Thaxton would have a ripple effect as close to197 students would be spilt between school including Bedford Primary and Montvale Elementary.
Both Thaxton Elementary and Body Camp Elementary are expected to close at the end of this school year.
