BASSETT (WSLS) - A tradition and a holiday collided Friday for senior night at Bassett High School.

The mascot wasn't the only one dressed up as Bassett took on Martinsville High School Halloween night. On the sidelines, Bassett students donned their favorite costumes. Even the littlest fans were putting school colors aside in the spirit of Halloween.

Seniors put their special night aside to give back to the little fans with a "Trunk-or-Treat." Mom Caneshia Price loved the idea.

"I thought that was good for the kids to actually be able to come out and trick or treat with aunt while actually going to see her at senior night as well," Price said.

Ladonna Varner is a senior class sponsor and says the outreach was actually the senior's idea.

"This will probably be a yearly thing. This was our first time trying it, we'll keep this going, this was a good thing," Varner explained.

The seniors had only a week and a half to put the event together, and they say the response from the students was incredible.

"They came up and saidm 'Mrs. Varner, this was good.' I'm like 'you're absolutely right.' This was good, so they had fun and it wasn't about them, it was about giving back to the community, inviting all the children and I love that a bunch of 18-year-olds wanted to hang out with a bunch of young kids, so that was good for my heart. I like that," Varner said.

It's pretty obvious the little kids enjoyed this new tradition, too. Callie Wood spent time collecting candy with her little brother and sister, who she dressed as Spider Girl. When asked why she chose that costume, she explained, "because I thought maybe everybody could be super hero."

So in one night, there were super heroes off, and on, the field.
