MARTINSVILLE (WSLS) – The iconic Henry Hotel in uptown Martinsville will be completely transformed and turned into apartments.

Business owners like Rick Martin believe the project could attract more people to the area.

“I knew that they had sold it and it was gonna turn around it was exciting and we’ve been waiting and waiting,” says Martin.

The developer John McCormack has been working on the project for the past two years. There will be 25 renovated apartments and $4 million invested in the former hotel.

McCormack has worked on another similar project in Bedford when he turned an old tobacco warehouse into loft-style apartments.

“My specialty is coming to small towns like Martinsville, Bedford, Petersburg and doing development projects that might otherwise be perceived as impossible or difficult and coming in to find a way to get them done,” says McCormack.

City officials say the new development is one of many improvements happened in Martinsville.

Some examples include the New College Institute building which just opened a few weeks ago and a facelift for the Liberty Fair Mall.
