Roanoke County football field name changed to honor longtime coach

ROANOKE (WSLS) -  Hundreds of people from as far as Richmond came to Roanoke to honor a long time coach.

Family, friends and former players came to Walrond Park Saturday afternoon to see Bobby Ragland coach his final game.

Ragland coached about 900 games in three sports --- baseball, football, and basketball for the North Roanoke Recreation Club. He coached for more than 40 years and says the big turnout is overwhelming.

"It's like having a 50 year sports reunion like you have your high school reunion this is like having almost 45 years of people that I haven't seen in a long time," said Ragland.

The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors also changed the name of the football field to Bobby Ragland Field. Ragland jokes he's grateful the name changed before he passed away.
