Roanoke city police investigating after baby suffered severe injuries

ROANOKE (WSLS) – A father is under investigation for child abuse after Roanoke Police say his baby suffered severe abuse. They say the baby’s father admitted to grabbing the baby boy because he kept crying.

The father called 911 when the 20-day-old baby became unresponsive. The baby was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. According to doctors, the baby had nearly a dozen fractured ribs, a broken tibia and bi-lateral clavicle fractures.

According to search warrants, the father told a detective that he tripped over a pet going down the stairs while holding the baby.

Through further investigation, doctors say the injuries couldn’t have been accidental and the father later admitted to hurting the baby.

Roanoke Police say the case is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.

A Commonwealth attorney will decide whether to prosecute and what charges the father could face.
