(WSLS) - The first wave of National Guard soldiers have taken up observation posts along the Texas-Mexico border. They're part of the 1,000 troops called up by Texas Governor Rick Perry. They'll serve as extra eyes on the border, reporting anything suspicious to border patrol officers. The deployment is expected to cost $12 million per month. 

NBA player and Roanoke native Troy Daniels will speak to kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Virginia today at 4 pm. He will focus on his journey and the importance of hard work. Daniels became an unsung hero for the Houston Rockets last season after being called up from the Developmental League.

The Villas at Oakwood will cut the ribbon on its new 102 twin-home community in Bedford. It begins at noon at the property near Bedford Memorial Hospital. 

The annual Hempfest kicks off in Seattle today. It's been billed as the world's largest marijuana legalization rally and hemp expo, but things are different now that marijuana is legal in Washington state. More than 120 bands, 100 speakers and 400 vendors will be at the weekend festival.
