Lynchburg City Council Makes History

Lynchburg (WSLS) - The city council in Lynchburg made history tonight when they voted for the first time to change the polling places without federal oversight.

In the past, because of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 cities like Lynchburg would have to submit paperwork to the federal Department of Justice.

Now, because of the supreme court ruling last year it nullified the act and cities don't have to worry about changing polling places with review, it's called pre clearance.

The Lynchburg city council is looking to change polling places from Heritage Elementary School to First Church of the Nazarene because there are not enough parking spaces.

The city says there are not adequate spots for voting booths as well and some of the elections are during school time which would interrupt classes.

The League of Women Voters in Lynchburg say they are not happy with the new change in the law.

They say the law doesn't protect minorities rights to vote and are urging state political leaders, like congressman Bob Goodlatte to amend the changes in the law.
