Roanoke (WSLS) – The Roanoke City Planning Commission will announce today if it’s in favor of rezoning to allow a proposed transitional living center to open in the Hurt Park Community.

The building, located in the 1700 block of Patterson Avenue, would house local women that are on parole or probation.

Roanoke native, Dorothy Owsley, would run the home.

Her plan is to open a transitional living center that would help women re-enter the community.

Up to eight women could stay in the home at one time.

Those women would attend sessions, help maintain the home, and hold a job.

Owsley says there is a need for a home like this in the community. She says, “Unless a woman has children or an addiction, or have been abused, there is no place for them start over again.”

A public hearing will take place today before the commission’s recommendation is announced.

The recommendation will then be given to city council. Council is then expected to make a final decision next week.
