SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE (WSLS) - A buoy floating on the surface is tied to the wreckage involved in a deadly two boat collision in July.

A search lasted for days and ended over the weekend when Ronald Lemons' body was found. Eric Dotterer with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries was one of the people who helped in the search.

He says new equipment and training speed up investigations.

"Most of the recovery efforts will go on," says Dotterer. "There's no visibility can't see your gauges and must know how much air you use."

Equipment like high tech cameras and GPS devices are used for cases under water and on land.

Recently, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has been investigating a case involving a man living illegally on the lake.

Karl Martin told us when they arrested him they found marijuana plans and some stolen goods.

"You don't hear about it a whole lot in this part of the world," says Martin. "Occasionally there will be people who go to a wooded area and live off the land."

In addition to high tech gear specialized training like diving is crucial.
