Local clinic working to combat pitbull overpopulation

ROANOKE (WSLS) - Mountain View Humane is teaming up with PetSmart Charities this month to cut down on the number of unwanted pit bulls in the area.

Mountain View Humane is offering specials through August so families can spay or neuter the breed at a low cost.

Surgery will cost $20. More than 130 pit bulls will be able to receive the discounted rate.

The goal is to reduce the high volume of pit bulls that local shelters receive.

David Flagler, Executive Director of the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection, is excited to see the campaign taking place.

He said pit bull overpopulation is a problem for the pound.

At any time, the breed makes up about 35% of the dogs at the shelter.

Flagler said pit bulls are also the most difficult to adopt out since a number of rental communities in the area do not allow people to own them.

Those factors lead to a large number of pit bulls remaining at the shelter and a high number being euthanized.

So far this year, 75 pit bulls have been put to sleep.
