Carroll County High School gets ground-breaking STEM lab

HILLSVILLE (WSLS) - Carroll County High School students will have a new science facility waiting for them when they return to school in just a couple weeks, and this lab has a unique purpose.

It is called a STEM lab, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math. This one will be used exclusively for agriculture, and school leaders say Carroll County High School is the first in the nation to dedicate a STEM lab to this field of study.

The new space will provide research and testing capabilities that will give students a jump start on agriculture careers. It will also supplement the existing school farm that students use to collect real-world samples.

Area farmers will have access to the lab to help with things like water testing and research.

The project cost around $500,000, and was funded through the USDA. Â
