BEDFORD COUNTY (WSLS) – The victim of a home invasion gave an exclusive look into her terrifying ordeal.

Melissa Cochran said the man who broke into her home stole some items and severely damaged her car.

The community has stepped up for Cochran. She took her car in the repair shop and the repairman is letting her repay him as she can. An account has also been set up by a person who remains to be anonymous at the Member One Federal Credit Union under Melissa Cochran.

In addition some people have given her cards and dropped food off at her home. Cochran says the community’s support has meant so much.

“I don’t have the words to say but thank you from the bottom of my heart for people being so good,” says Cochran. “I’ve just never thought there were still good people out here in the world.”

Cochran told us what happened last week still gives her nightmares and night terrors. Tuesday night, Bedford County Sheriff’s Department say a man police identified as David Mendoza broke into her home and threatened her with a gun while she was in the shower.

“I was in a state of shock,” says Cochran. “I stared. I didn’t know what to say or do and that’s when he grabbed me by the hair and put the gun to my head.”

Cochran who has trouble waiting said she was able to run away from Mendoza back to her home and call 911. She believes her guardian angel, her father, was there. He passed away 10 years ago.

“I feel like he’s my guardian angel and watches for me all the time and I felt like he was with me the day this happened,” says Cochran.
