VA communities reach out to Blacksburg for solar program advice

Ā BLACKSBURG (WSLS)-

The Town of Blacksburg is leading the way in solarizing its community, now other areas are looking to mimic the same success.

Blacksburg wrapped up its Solarize Blacksburg campaign several weeks ago in which the town teamed up with installers and community advocates to make solar more affordable. Organizers say they were the first in Virginia to try it. Now other parts of the Commonwealth are reaching out to Blacksburg for assistance in doing the same.

"We've has 12 other communities reach out to us for assistance and guidance and just advice on how to do it in their own communities," said Blacksburg Sustainability Director Carol Davis. "It's clear that this model works and other communities are excited to follow what we've done."

Davis said Charlottesville recently launched a successful solarize campaign and Roanoke launched its own two weeks ago. Roanoke's sign up deadline is September 30. So far, 258 people have signed up.
