New Running Back in Blacksburg Catches Beamer’s Eye

Blacksburg (WSLS)   The race to backup Hokies running back Trey Edmunds may have another entrant.

The best running back in Blacksburg that you haven’t heard of yet–is Shai McKenzie.

The 4-star recruit out of Washington, Pennsylvania enrolled early but couldn’t participate in the spring because he was recovering from a torn right ACL. McKenzie rushed for more than 2700 yards and 42 scores as a junior in high school.

Well—he was up and running at the Hokies opening practice Monday afternoon.

His 5-11, 220 pound frame was moving well, and Coach Frank Beamer took notice.

He pointed out in his post practice press conference that McKenzie made some natural looking cuts–something he says you look for..and that he was impressed with him.

McKenzie will be fighting for playing time with Joel Caleb and JC Coleman behind Hokies starter Trey Edmunds.
