BLACKSBURG (WSLS) – Around 20 mine rescue teams from across the region are honing their disaster response skills in Blacksburg.

During this annual competition, teams are given a scenario such as a mine explosion or a fire, then they are timed and graded on their response. The teams are required to participate in two competitions each year, and every mine has a rescue team assigned to it.

Participants say that although they take this competition seriously, when it comes to a real-world crisis, they all respond as one team with one goal.

The event draws teams from Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky, and it wraps up Thursday evening.
