Blacksburg (WSLS) – The Alexander Black House and Cultural Center will celebrate it’s grand opening today after more than a year of restoration.
$800,000 was spent to make improvements to the first floor and exterior of the building. Inside the new space, there are a number of meeting rooms, an area for children, and exhibits about the history of Blacksburg.
The executive director of the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation, Rhonda Morgan, calls the space “Blacksburg’s Living Room.”
“We want this to be a community cultural center,” says Morgan. “We offer that folks can just come and sit on the porch and have coffee if they want to or throw a blanket out on the lawn and have lunch. We really want this to be a place of community gathering.”
The foundation plans to renovate the basement and second floor as well. It’s working to raise another $800,000 to complete the project.
The grand opening begins at 10 a.m.
