BLACKSBURG (WSLS) - More than a dozen college educators from Iraq are in the New River Valley for the next few weeks to learn more about higher education.

Virginia Tech is hosting both teachers and administrators from the Kurdistan region of Iraq. This is the final part of a nine-month program for the group to learn about leadership and curriculum in their universities.

The group says they are seeing a lot of growth in higher education. In the 1990's, the Kurdistan region had only three universities. Now, there are 13, and Virginia Tech leaders say it is important to help them sustain this development.

Participants are hoping this program can continue for other educators in Iraq though the years to come.Â
