Hokies Open Practice in Blacksburg

Blacksburg (WSLS) Coach Beamer was pleased with the overall effort of his squad--he thought they got a lot accomplished, perhaps the most of any first practice in his career.

He was happy with his new kickers, and of course--discussed the quarterback situation.   He thought Michael Brewer handled himself well and Brenden Motley was consistent.

Here's a rundown of the quarterback situation as Virginia Tech moves forward. He expects that they will settle on a quarterback pretty quickly.

The lineup of potential replacements starts with Logan's backup last season, Mark Leal. The redshirt senior is long on experience but short on actual playing time and will have to have a more dominating fall camp than he did in the spring to get the job.

Redshirt sophomore Brenden Motley from nearby Christiansburg high flashed moments of brilliance in the spring and showed why he was so highly touted out of coach Tim Cromer's program. He's mobile with a strong arm--a combination which should sound familiar to Hokies fans.

And Texas Tech transfer Michael Brewer is a talented--if not unknown in these parts-- former bigtime recruit out of Austin who arrived in Blacksburg this summer.

There will be plenty of eyes on him and a collection of freshman any of which could step up.
