BLACKSBURG (WSLS) – The Town Council in Blacksburg is getting an update on how to handle parking downtown.
During the summer parking is fine, but when students return in the fall, it can be a problem. Drivers say it can be a nightmare.
“There’s limited parking on the street after 5 p.m. The parking is free, but there aren’t many spots and you usually have to drive around look for a place for a few minutes,” Rob Simmons who lives in Blacksburg said.
Officials with the Town of Blacksburg updated the Town Council on what they’re doing to make sure people can enjoy downtown.
Town workers say Blacksburg Police will have computerized equipment to write citations, enforcing the amount of time people can park. They’ve also created 4 motorcycle spots and 5 handicapped spaces.
“Just to give more options for folks from feedback we’ve gotten,” Matt Hanratty, Housing and Neighborhoods for the town of Blacksburg said.
Town Council is also looking at raising parking meter rates. Currently, to park downtown it costs $0.25- $0.50 an hour to park. One option would be to increase the fee to a $1.00 per hour.
