Roanoke City Council looks into bridge designs for Franklin Road Project

ROANOKE (WSLS) - Engineers say the Franklin Road bridge is in need of major repairs since it was built in 1936. During Monday's City Council meeting, several options for bridge designs were discussed.

Engineers with AECOM showed different options which ranged from $12 to $36 million. The more expensive bridges are called 'signature bridges,' which are specially designed to suit the area. They are considered ideal for gateways or to reflect revitalization of an area.

However, City Council members agreed that, with several bridges needing to be replaced or renovated, having a specialized bridge for Franklin Road would be too costly.

AECOM now is looking into engineering and designs for the new bridge.
