SALEM (WSLS) - Salem is the city where hundreds of athletes test out their skills from the court to the field.

With its reputation as the "Championship City," John McPhail, the Junior Olympic Commissioner for Virginia says the decision to choose Salem to host this weekend's ASA Softball Championships was easy.

"Salem has an extremely high rating," says McPhail. "They win an award for the national convention for their facilities in hosting the ASA Championship play."

Before big sporting events are held in Salem, there are bids placed first. For the ASA National Softball Championships, a three minute video was created for a presentation. In it showed what kind of hotels we have, previous games, and our facilities.

Every year, people present bids to host big games and the competition is stuff. John Shaner, the director of parks and recreation, says even though Salem competes against big cities, Salem's reputation stands out.

"We have a great staff that are very dedicated to the long hours and everything it takes to put it on," says Shaner.
